Walked out around eight. The jacket stayed on until ten. Tried a different place. Ordered a flat white, seventy pesos. The milk was hot this time but the cup was too small. Drank it in three sips.
Walked to Mercado José Castillo Tielemans. A man was selling socks from a table near the entrance. Three pairs for forty pesos. Mine have holes. Bought them. Stopped at a comedor inside. Ordered frijoles and tortillas, twenty-five pesos. The woman brought them in a clay bowl. I ate at the counter.
Lay down and read. The Sheltering Sky. The book is still slow.
Paid for another night. Two hundred pesos. Went out around five. Walked the grid north of the plaza. Bought water from a tienda on Real de Guadalupe, ten pesos. Found a stand near Santo Domingo. Tamales, two for thirty. Ate them on a bench. The window is open. I can hear someone hosing down the street.
